John McCain needs to make up for two months of horrific campaigning in about three weeks. Regardless of how he does in Wednesday night's debate - and I'm not holding out much hope of a breakthrough performance - he can still use the medium of television and radio to persuade voters. Why doesn't he take a page from Hillary's playbook, and craft a clever ad highlighting his considerable experience in a time of crisis? One Obama's weak points is his stunning lack of foreign policy experience. Despite the fact that the economic crisis has diverted our attention, the fact is we still live in a dangerous world. Wouldn't it make sense for McCain to remind voters of this? Instead, he is playing catch-up. Obama releases his ideas for repairing the economy, and then McCain does so a day later. I would love to know what is going on behind the scenes of his campaign. Are they in meltdown mode? Where are his advisors and consultants - or has it already turned into a bunker mentality? why would they let him continue to stumble so badly? Perhaps his infamous temperment has finally gotten the better of him, and he is beyond accepting any advice or help. Or it could be simpler than that. Conservatives have never really liked John McCain. they've never totally bought into his "maverick" shtick. Instead, they see him as a party traitor without strong conservative convictions. Maybe they are holding their breath until Nov. 4th and then can finally breath a sigh of relief and say "hasta la vista, baby" to Juan Pablo McCain.
